Like a lot of you, I got pulled into the Jellyverse chasing some vague nostalgia for simpler times and tec, aux cords, expandable SD cards, and, most importantly, freedom from social media. First off, the Jelly is an unequivocally annoying phone. Typing a complex password on it can make you question your sanity. But that's exactly why it works. You need friction with a device as addictive as a smartphone. My poor jelly was shot out the window of my van when taking a particulary sharp turn on an country road and its untimely demise has forced me back onto my old iPhone, and the contrast has been shocking. I hadn't realised how much the Jelly was giving me my life back. For context: during the few months I had it, I read The Hobbit, the entire Lord of the Rings trilogy, 300+ pages of Infinite Jest, and a fair chunk of Moby-Dick. As a dyslexic who never considered themselves much of a reader, that came as a surprise to everyone, especially me. Since switching back to the iPhone, I'm finding it difficult to even get into the headspace to sit down with a book. I've tried plenty of digital detoxs's over the years. At one point my daily phone was large samsung tablet with a SIM card. I've tried minimalist launchers, app blockers, and dumb phones. The Jelly is the best compromise I've found. It can still do everything you need: Instagram, YouTube, Spotify, maps, messaging. But it's so small that you never forget you're using a phone. You can't disappear into it the way you can with the massive screens we're all carrying around now. I'm not saying it's for everyone, but if the idea appeals to you, and you're stubborn enough to stick with it, it might be the best phone you ever own. Now I just need Unihertz to start selling replacement screens again, please Unihertz can I have a new phone or a titan 2 lol
