Been stuck on what to do with these ugly windows for a year! Feel like the solution is simple but I can’t see it
Post
I’ve been trying to redesign my bedroom for a year but I always get stuck on these ugly windows and their ugly view! Quick rundown of my issues with them so I don’t ramble: • Go across entire width of the room. Ideally, shouldn’t be blocked at all as the room gets very little sunlight (despite being south facing 🥲), which restricts furniture placement • Huge, old, clunky window frames • Overlook a recessed, communal balcony. Door visible from right window, hanging chair blocks the whole left window (just about visible if you zoom in on slide 1) • Very ugly, very visible railing + a dropped beam that lowers the effective ceiling for light even more. From my mattress on the floor, the white bar that separates the top and bottom windows is at the perfect height to block even more of the sky (slide 2). • They’re fairly high considering I want my mattress on the floor and due to the window sill, balcony ceiling and dropped beam, no direct light actually reaches the floor I would like my room to have the vibe of slides 3 and 4 but I don’t know how to get it there with these windows. I’m halfway through painting my room the yellow on the left side of slide 1. I’ll probably keep it white above the windows as it helps make the ceiling look a bit higher. Also would like to do something with the radiator to make it less clunky looking but not sure what yet. I don’t want to cover them up as I get cold easily and need the heat! Ideas I’ve thought of so far are: • Covering left and right windows. I wouldn’t have to see the door or hanging chair + gives me more furniture placement options. But would drastically reduce the amount of light in my room, which I already have to supplement with 3 lamps + an SAD lamp in the middle of the day in the summer. I could get more SAD lamps? • Vinyl wood wrap on frames? Kind of ugly when used anywhere but the floor and I’d like it to feel like wood and be matte • DIY thin (removable) wood frame on top? My favourite idea but labour intensive + easy to make too bulky • Paint frames to look like wood. Changes must be relatively easy to reverse as I’m very indecisive • Draping fabric over the frames. Not sure how or what kind but could be nice? • Painting dropped beam sky blue (again, fave idea but not sure if realistic with UK weather! Or fire safe?) • Something to do with curtains?? Please help because I’m at my wit’s end! I’m open to any ideas. I can’t do any big, expensive renovations to the windows (I don’t think the council would allow it, even if I could afford it) but I can do whatever else I like
