Window Refresh Questions

scoredreach out

Post

I intend to refresh my old single pane casement windows. Before I begin I still have a lot of research to do and have had some input from friends that are adamant DIYers with their recommendations. With that said, this is my first time approaching window work so I felt it best to come here and do some more questioning. Some windows are fixed and some open. Those that open mostly need new operating hardware. Some just have wood rot from moisture over time that needs some love (loose screws) My questions are - There is moisture getting between the exterior single pane window and interior storm pane. Should I approach reglazing the exterior window prior to anything else to see if that mitigates the issue? Or would it be best to try and seal the interior storm pane first. Less is more so if the first approach has visible improvement that’s great but happy to do both if need be. For operating hardware, the windows that have minor wood rot around the screws is it best to do the dowel and wood glue approach or is simply grabbing a slightly wider screw acceptable? I think back to using wooden toothpicks in a door frame screw holes for tightening up a hinge and that worked well long term. There is water damage in the bottom sill of some windows where moisture has probably been trapped for some time. My partner is not entirely sold on paint colors at the moment so is it best to mitigate this issue for now by sanding down and applying a few coats of spar urethane to protect it for now? All in all - reglaze, replace hardware and/or screws, prevent further water damage. This home is new to us and was built in 1971 with original windows. I prefer to maintain/refresh rather than replace. If you happen to know the name of these windows please share as I cannot find anything specific to this set up and (I’ll get this wrong but interior storm windows with tabs?).

Summary

The author is a new homeowner actively troubleshooting original 1971 windows, asking about reglazing, hardware repair, rot mitigation, and whether to replace or refresh them.

Reasoning

This is a strong window-replacement/repair intent post: it focuses entirely on old single-pane casement windows, moisture between panes, wood rot, operating hardware, and whether to reglaze or replace parts. The author explicitly says the home is new to them, the windows are original, and they prefer to maintain/refresh rather than replace, which still indicates active consideration of window work and likely future replacement interest.
