Faction: Kingdom of Tulipa Class: De Zeven Provinciën-class Light Cruiser Background: De Zeven Provinciën (pennant code C802) ) was developed as a response to the threat posed by the Empire of Japan towards the Dutch East Indies (modern-day Indonesia), which culminated in a major naval expansion beginning in 1932 with the purpose of replacing the World War I-era Java-class light cruisers, and were intended to be improved follow-ons to HNLMS De Ruyter. The lead ship of this class, preliminarily known as Kruiser 1939 in 1938 was laid down as HNLMS Kijkudin on 5 September 1939. A few months later, in winter 1940, she would be renamed as HNLMS Eendracht (which also led to the class name, for a time being called the Eendracht-class). Initially the design was to incorporate a main armament of ten 152mm/53 Bofors main guns in two triple and two twin turrets with six twin 40mm Anti-Aircraft Guns and six 533mm torpedo tubes in two triple tube configurations. Unfortunately, construction would be halted with the Battle of the Netherlands, when the German Heer and Luftwaffe invaded the country on 10 May 1940, and the Dutch fully occupied on 17 May. At the time, Eendracht was only 12% completed, but upon the Nazi takeover, the Germans began to redesign the ship, now renamed KH2 (Kreuzer Holland 2), with plans to equip it with main guns from a broken down battleship, likely the 170mm secondaries used on the decommissioned Deutschland-class pre-dreadnought Hannover. Despite this, work on finishing these ships for the Kriegsmarine progressed very slowly and was ultimately never completed under German occupation, due to a combination of the dockyard’s capacity being used for other purposes as well as sabotage by the Dutch Resistance. Yet in spite of this, KH2 would be launched under the Kriegsmarine on 19 December 1941. After World War II, construction on the restored Eendracht would continue, with wartime lessons being applied to the ship’s design, including changing her planned pre-war armament to an all-gun platform, consisting of eight 152mm guns in four twin turrets, eight 57mm/60 Bofors Anti-Air guns in four twin turrets, and eight 40mm Bofors AA Guns, all in single turrets. She would be renamed HNLMS De Ruyter in 1947 before swapping names with her sister ship in 1950, finally being commissioned into the Royal Netherlands Navy as HNLMS De Zeven Provinciën on 18 November 1953. The cruiser’s career with the Dutch Navy would be uneventful, serving until her decommissioning and sale to Peru in August 1976. She would serve as BAP Aguirre (and from 1986 to 1988, BAP Almirante Grau) of the Peruvian Navy until her final decommissioning on 21 March 1999. She would be sold for scrap in 2000. Namesake: HNLMS De Zeven Provinciën, Dutch for “the Seven Provinces'' is the sixth Dutch Warship (and third after the establishment of a Dutch Monarchy) that refers to the original seven provinces that made up the Dutch Republic , formally known as the Republic of the Seven United Netherlands and is also known as the United Provinces of the Netherlands. This state, the precursor to the modern-day Kingdom of the Netherlands, was established with the Union of Utrecht signed on 23 January 1579 between the Protestant-led provinces of the then Spanish Netherlands in reaction to the overreach of the Roman Catholics and the Spanish under King Felipe II, and would formalized with the Act of Abjuration, essentially declaring independence from Spain, in 1581. The seven provinces consisted of Groningen, Frisia, Ovirijssel, Guelders, Utrecht, Zeeland, and Holland, the last of which included the Dutch Republic’s de facto capital. The Hague. Through its trading companies such as the Dutch West India Company (GWC) and the more infamous Dutch East India Company (VOC), the Dutch Republic would grow to become one of Europe’s foremost Great Powers, challenging Portugal, England and France on a number of occasions. Economic decline in the 1780s would lead to conflict between its leader the Stadtholders and the Patriots who wanted a more republican government. This would culminate in the Revolutionary French-backed Batavian Revolution in 1795, which ousted the Stadtholder and established the Batavian Republic, one of France’s sister republics. Now to be honest, as far as the general aesthetic for the Tulipan ships. I find the idea of the faction being wood elves an odd choice. While having them being one with nature is definitely one thing, the Dutch have spent generations reclaiming land from the sea to such a point that I could legit see them one day dragging Doggerland back from the watery grave that is Dogger Bank, I'm also like...isn't the Netherlands mostly just grasslands for dairy products? But I suppose that's their decision and I'll respect it...if only because De 7 is honestly pretty cute despite my criticisms. Next time, we're going back to modern aircraft carriers, and we're moving from Britain with Queen Elizabeth to the modern Russian Federation with their first STOBAR aircraft carrier, and one that has happened to have a lot of bad luck going for her in recent years, RFS Admiral Kuznetsov.
