I bought a $200 DeskCycle to use at my desk since I work as a programmer and sit too much, but also don't want to be standing all day. It says at its highest resistance setting of 8, it's 40 lbs of resistance. If I have it set at 4/8, which I assume is about 20 lbs of resistance, and I pedal at 60 RPM over an hour, how many calories am i burning from pedaling alone? The calorie counter on the machine itself is obviously grossly overestimating as it says I burned 110 calories in 20 minutes. So I used an online calculator and it said I'm burning about 170 per hour over my BMR, which still sounds wonderfully high to me. Does this sound realistic? How much does this depend on my personal perceived effort? Is it mostly about the objective resistance + RPM that determines calorie burn? If I get really strong and fit and am able to sustain this output with less effort, am I still burning roughly the same number of calories?
