What does walking on the treadmill do for your body?

I’m sorry if this may sound stupid but I know nothing about exercise. I’m starting a gym membership at planet fitness this month because I want to use the treadmill to lose weight. My goal is to slim down as much as possible. However, I’m wondering if that’s possible just using the treadmill (at incline is good I heard) or if I absolutely need to incorporate some other exercises? Has anyone gotten good results with just the treadmill and if so what was your routine? Again, I know this may sound dumb as I know walking is good for you but I’m not sure exactly what the results would be (as in will you gain muscle and look bigger or lose weight and look smaller). (I know diet is important, I’m in a calorie deficit)
