This past Saturday, my family and I were just chilling at home when we heard a loud crash from outside. We take a look out the window and see that our neighbor has missed his driveway by a lot and has backed his huge truck over our utility boxes that are in our yard. One of them is smashed into a thousand pieces and there’s wires everywhere, the other one is bent and still under the front wheel. My husband goes outside to investigate and sees our neighbor stumble out of his truck. He can barely stand but hobbles his way into his house by leaning on whatever’s close by. My husband says when he walked up to his truck, he could smell the liquor on him and he decides not to confront him. Drunk guy never turns around, so husband takes pictures and goes back inside. As far as we can tell, our internet is out, but nothing else. We have no idea what all those boxes are for out there. We contemplate calling the police but we’re unsure if we should. He’s not driving anymore, so what could they realistically do? But also, what if he ran over something important, something that’s now unsafe? The boxes are on our property, are we going to get a big bill unless we have proof? Are pictures enough? I want to add here that we don’t know this guy very well. We’ve seen him outside a bunch, noticed he always has a can of miller light in hand. When we wave, he waves back. We spoken a couple times and in those times he’s lightly “joked” that we must hate him because our kids don’t play in his yard. My oldest is 3 and his daughter is middle school age so I’m not really sure what he means. So we send pictures and feelers out to a few friends/family and basically ask them for advice. One person says because this is the first time something like this has happened, to let it go to avoid starting shit with my neighbors. Everyone else says we should call the police, at least to get a report. We call the non-emergency line and tell them what happened, admit to them what we’re unsure if it’s a police matter and ask them for advice as well. Dispatch lady says she’s going to send a police car over but it’s going to be awhile. Advises us to keep an eye out on his truck and if he tries to drive again to call 911. About an hour later, an officer shows up. He shines his flashlight and checks everything out, knocks on their door and doesn’t seem to get an answer. Our neighbors across the street, who are very good friends with drunk guy, happened to be outside. The police officer talks to them for a minute, then he gets in his car and drive away. He never spoke to us and we don’t get a call back. Sunday morning, my husband gets up at 4am for work and says the truck is still where it was. I get up at 6am and the truck is in his driveway. The bent utility box is upright, the other box’s pieces are kinda swept up, wires are in a pile now. Later that afternoon, I see the across the street neighbors, drunk guy, and drunk guy’s wife are gathered in their lawn, gesturing at our house/the boxes and laughing. Later in the evening, drunk guy is having a block party outside. He’s invited pretty much everyone on the street expect for us. But like I said, we don’t know this guy very well, so maybe it’s nothing. Monday, a city inspector comes out and says the utilities that were run over are just our internet. I start to feel silly to for the police thing. Our neighbors on all sides are seemly acting weird. They won’t wave back to us even though they’re clearly staring. The internet guys send a truck over. They replace the box but we get call from them saying our signal is still jacked up and they schedule a guy to come over the next day. Tuesday (today), Internet guy spends about 2 hours at our house fixing the internet. He spends maybe 10 minutes of in inside, the rest out by the box. He asked me what happened when he first gets there, and then asks me for a lot of details when I give him a summary - he was clearly invested, lol. When he comes back inside he tells me that I won’t believe it, but drunk guy came home and approached him, asked him what he was doing. Here’s what Internet guy says is what happened: Internet guy tells him he’s trying to fix my internet. Drunk guys says there shouldn’t be much to fix, he called the internet people himself and they were there yesterday. Internet guy asks him what happened and drunk guy says he just accidentally backed into it. Internet guys tells him my signal is still all over the place so he’s still gotta fix it. Drunk guy insists that this isn’t true, he had someone come already. Internet guy tells him he’s still gotta fix it. Drunk guy gets all huffy then and asks if he’s going to get a bill. Internet guy tells him he doesn’t know, it’s above his pay grade. I’m a bit baffled by all of this. I don’t understand why drunk guy never came to our door to say “hey sorry I ran over your stuff, what can I do?” especially since I don’t think he knew the police came until later on Sunday. I don’t really get why our other neighbors are being weird. I doubt he told them he was drunk, but he didn’t get in legal trouble. I’m not sure what else we were supposed to do in that situation, but maybe calling the police was a bad move and has just outcasted us from the neighborhood. Should I have just waited for the inspector? Does calling the police right away put me in the wrong for this? Him being drunk at the time makes me feel like I was in the right, but he was already home/parked and because it was only the internet makes me feel like a Karen.
