Class A (but thankfully not A*) historic building. I want to replace the windows of my unit. My building is old with wood windows throughout. I know the windows in the front are going to end up having to be fully wood , with more flexibility in the back. I have no interest in changing the sizes of any openings, just updating them. Anyone have experience with doing this recently? If so, what is the best order of operations (reaching out to a window company first, or getting permits?) Did you use the same window company for ordering the windows as installation? If so, which? I've also got some additional questions regarding permits: How did you handled the permit - under your name, the window installer's name? For a case like this, I've heard it might be best to handle the front and back permits separately - would you agree with this? Most of my windows need reasonably significant repair, which is why I am going for replacement, especially since it would be great to upgrade to double paned windows; I've heard that repair permits are cheaper and also more flexible - is this true? I've also got questions regarding types of windows themselves: I'm reasonably sure (given how the wood windows are still original) that I can't go for wood-clad, but since I'm curious - is the delta between wood-clad versus wood worthwhile to try to bend the rules for this topic, or is it likely to not be worth it? Additionally, I'd largely decided on Marvin Elevate for the back windows - do folks have (recent) experience with that brand, and SF dealers of it? Very open to any feedback/advice on this topic!
