Post

[Parent post: "Energy usage excessive"] I’ll keep it short and sweet. I need ideas. I cannot get my energy usage down. It’s always been high but now I’m tired of it and with how expensive electric has gotten it’s getting overwhelming. I have gas water heater, furnace, stove, and dryer. Two window units, like 1500 sq ft house. But there is no trend that I can find. I’m averaging 1300-1700 kWh a month. Any help is appreciated. --- Those old window units are like trying to cool your house with a hair dryer running backwards - they'll work overtime just to make you think they're doing something. I learned this the hard way when my ancient unit in the bedroom started running 24/7 last summer, turned out the thermostat was basically broken and it was just guessing at temperatures The dryer vent thing is spot on too, mine got clogged with lint buildup and suddenly my electric bill jumped like 200 bucks that month. It's one of those invisible energy vampires that you never think about until you're digging through lint like you're panning for gold. Also might be worth getting one of those little energy monitors that plugs into outlets, they can help you track down which appliances are being the biggest energy hogs without having to play detective with your whole house
